Breast Cancer Screening for Seniors: Stay Healthy, Stay Independent

When it comes to taking care of your health, there are some things you simply can’t ignore. Breast cancer screening is one of them.

When you’re living independently or in enhanced personal care, early detection can make a world of difference.

Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women, but finding it early can significantly increase your chances of recovery. The five-year survival rate for breast cancer detected early (localized stage) is 99%. The sooner you detect it, the more options you’ll have for treatments that are less invasive and more successful.

Breast cancer screening plays an important role in increasing lifespan. Yet it also can help you maintain your quality of life. Catching breast cancer early can mean avoiding more aggressive therapies and staying focused on doing the things you love, whether it’s spending time with family, gardening, or taking trips to your favorite places.

What Are the Recommended Breast Cancer Screenings?

If you’re over 65, you might wonder if it’s still necessary to get screened or if you’re out of the window of risks.

Indeed, it’s still necessary. Medical experts, including those at the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, recommend that many women continue mammograms every two years through age 74. The frequency and duration might vary slightly based on your personal health history, so it’s always a good idea to talk with your doctor to develop a plan tailored to you.

The most common and effective screening tool, mammograms sound a little intimidating but are quick, relatively painless, and offer a high level of accuracy. If other risk factors are involved, like family history or prior abnormal screenings, your doctor may also recommend additional tests like ultrasounds or MRIs.

Reducing Risk Where You Can

While you can’t completely eliminate the risk of breast cancer, there are steps you can take to lower it. Lifestyle choices like eating healthy, staying active, and limiting alcohol play a more significant role than you might think.

Another factor to keep in mind is communication. Share your concerns with both caregivers and healthcare providers. Enhanced personal care programs can support you in staying on top of these habits and scheduling regular checkups. A team approach not only keeps you on track but also simplifies the process so you can spend more time enjoying life and less time worrying about logistics.

How Enhanced Personal Care Can Support You

If you’re living in an enhanced personal care setting, you have an added advantage. Our communities are designed to help you prioritize your well-being in ways that go beyond the basics. We offer services like transportation to medical appointments, wellness programs that promote physical activity, and on-site health screenings.

Our goal is to make your daily life as stress-free as possible. Having caregivers who can remind you of upcoming screenings, answer your questions, and provide emotional support makes it much simpler to follow through on these important health checks.

Because ultimately, when your environment actively supports your health, maintaining good habits becomes second nature.

Take the First Step

Breast cancer screening is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself and your future. With early detection, regular checkups, and support from your care team, you have all the tools you need to stay healthy. Now’s the perfect time to book that mammogram or have a conversation with your doctor about your screening schedule.

At Priority Life Care, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

We just attended an Immersion Day at the Celebration Villa-Allison Park. What a great way to get to know what it is like to live at CVAP! No tour. Just spending time interacting residents; meeting Claire, the visiting therapy dog; playing a fun game; participating in a group discussion; and enjoying a delicious lunch! A special shout out to Chris and Cathy for arranging our time together! The staff and residents were very friendly and we were so glad that we came. Tom and June Maier

WOW! What a great place. My husband and I went today with my mother-in-law. We attended their "Immersion Day" where we could experience what a day there was like. This was not a stuffy tour! We really were able to feel apart of their day. Mom was able to engage with some residents and participate in some of the scheduled activities. So much fun! We were also invited to lunch, the food was very good, and the dining area was so inviting. We were very impressed. The building is all one level and very well maintained. Very clean and spacious. The residents rooms were very large, with great windows and large clean bathrooms. There is lots of natural light throughout the building. There are many sitting areas and living rooms with large screen tvs. These areas were were well decorated and comfortable. Also a cool activity room, gardens, physical therapy area. Great front porch too! But what impressed us the most was the atmosphere! Very homey and happy. Chris and Kathy went above and beyond to show us around and answer our questions. I loved how they interacted with the residents. Their friendliness and sincerity did not go unnoticed!! All of the staff we spoke with were friendly and open. We hope to have mom move in soon!!
